Through all my years of wandering, tramping and exploring, I’ve come to realize a great many things about our world. I originally started traveling to find out the truth of this existential crisis we all call life, and after a decade, the mosaic of truth has finally come into focus. The stresses and anxieties of modern life can consume a person, and they may not even know it… But when one finds peace and harmony and balance in their life, everything can fall into place, and then life isn’t so difficult anymore. For me, no medical treatments or therapies compare to the true peace that one discovers while trekking through the untouched wilderness.
We were born in and from the natural world, and the more we move away from that world, the more mental illness and depression, and anxiety we all experience. It’s not impossible to contribute these things to the ever-expanding population boom, or to the high-paced society we must work in to make a living and survive, but from my experience, it is the time spent away from the rat race and the cities that provide one with an understanding, with balance, and with peace. Without balance, the negativities of the world bear down on us.
Recently, I felt the heat, the anxiety of today’s world, and it was affecting my mood, my sanity and my inner peace, so I escaped for awhile. I drove deep into the farmlands north of Coshocton, Ohio and explored a wilderness area along the Mohican river. I found a rare, tranquil place, where I couldn’t hear the cars, the farm equipment, or the chaos of the cities. And in that peace, I felt all of the stress waste away, and my shoulders relaxed, and my mind cleared. Hiking in areas like this are some of the only ways to escape the modern world anymore, and sadly, these areas are shrinking daily. It’s important to figure out where you came from, because without that understanding you can not know where you’re heading.
The next time you feel as though life’s become too overwhelming, grab a pair of trekking poles, or a walking stick, and head out into the wild lands. Because that’s where all life originated, lived for millions of years, and where we seemed to have forgotten as a culture.
I recently had the chance to try out Black Diamond’s Alpine Carbon Cork Trekking Poles, and I wanted to tell you about them. On my last hike, I tested these bad boys out and found the quality and comfort second to none. Black Diamond is notorious for creating some of the best outdoors gear on the market, and they came through on these trekking poles. They are versatile, fully adjustable and made for four-season travel. Made with high quality materials, the Alpine Carbon’s are very lightweight, and fitted with a cork grip which provides a non-slip extension, which is especially important for steep terrain. The shaft is made of a three part, extending carbon fiber, which allows for versatility based on the user’s height and designated landscape.
A lot of trekking poles on the market seem to throw their designs together as cheaply as possible, but Black Diamond is the very satisfying exception. While other companies create a weak product, with cheaper materials, which tend to be flimsy or bulky and non-ergonomic, the Alpine Carbon Cork trekking pole is king. I found they are easy to use, setup and adjust, and are exceptional when terrain quickly ramps up in difficulty. They feel great, fitting in my hands nicely, and are strong enough to where I feel comfortable enough relying on it to take all my weight when needed. It’s not often that I have as much trust in a piece of gear, but considering the care that went into creating a solid product like this, I came away impressed.
