We checked into our room and made ourselves at home before going to dinner. Our room had two twin beds, small kitchenette and private bath. The room was simple, but it was the place outside that made the stay an iconic place to experience, especially with the summer sun sticking around the sky for 20+ hours a day. What that meant for my travel partner and father-in-law Ken was that we could venture down to the river platform and watch the water go by, the fish jump and the eagles hunt anytime we wanted. If that was in my backyard, I’d be down there more often than I’d be found in the house.
For dinner, we wandered south towards Homer and stopped at the locally renowned Rosco’s Pizza. I loved the atmosphere with all the humorous and creative Alaska-inspired artwork and t-shirts. The whole setup was very well done, unique and lively. We opted for a large pizza with pepperoni and reindeer sausage on it, and we were both glad we did. The immediate taste was very satisfying, making my mouth water instantly. I called it “mmm inducing.” The crunch was what you want, while also being juicy with yummy cheese. Rosco’s sauce was rich and delicious, and we ate until we were well beyond stuffed.
We took a drive to Cohoe beach and wandered the low tide for awhile, before retiring to the river dock at Alaska Riverview Lodge. The view was simply awesome. Fish were jumping up in front of us and a couple made it onto the deck, and I thought about snatching and eating them right there, but they found their way back into the water before I could. There were bunnies everywhere in this little slice of paradise hidden away in Kasilof. I can’t wait to come back to the beautiful and just simply stunning Kenai peninsula, and when I do, next time I’ll be coming with a fishing pole and an empty belly ready to eat well.
