During the summer, the goto in foot fashion is either a type of sandal or a flipflop, but in both cases, you’re often giving up support in favor of a cooler, lighter feel. And while when I’m home from my travels I’m a notorious flipflop-wearer, I have began venturing out and am here to tell you that you don’t have to give up support and foot security during the hotter months. The worst part about wearing open-toed anything is that what if it rains? Or what if you want to go off the beaten path, even for two seconds? Well, there are options…
Garmont is a shoemaker who are perhaps more famous for their hiking and terrain footwear, but they are also very good at making stylish and supportive shoes for all occasions. I recently had the opportunity to test Garmont’s Tikal shoe for men, which is a beautiful suede/reversed leather and is outfitted with a Michelin® Cross Terrain outsole. The Tikal was designed to keep your feet comfortable in warmer weather, and they’re built with a soft, comforting leather that allows you to wear them without socks.
The technical build is as follows: one piece of seamless 2.2mm reversed leather that moves to a foot bed of cotton top sheeting and internal coconut fibers that naturally inhibit growth of bacteria, while providing a natural moisture-wicking feature.
The Michelin outsole transforms what would be considered a fashionable shoe into a very versatile one that can handle different terrains, while adding additional stability and support, with the added benefit of traction on uneven terrain. And even with that added support, you’re not giving up on how ranged the styling is, as they can work for everyday use or for trail hikes. Garmont gives you the freedom to choose… It’s really up to you.
The Tikal offers a fresh, natural feel, while the sole gives you a firm foundation to roam with, which I found to be very attractive, comfortable, and capable of handling my versatile on and off-road lifestyle. All in all, I found that the Tikal shoe is very well-built, aesthetically pleasing, and is a great transition from bare sandals and flipflops in the summer months.
