Gearing Up To Look My Best: Can You Handlebar?

With my wedding fast approaching, I’ve been pushing myself to not only get ahead of planning every detail and of course, all of the logistics therein, but I’ve been working on my appearance especially. From being a writer who sits for hours upon hours everyday, I’m a bit more out of shape than I’d prefer to be in for my wedding photos, but also I’m working to wrangle the beast that is my beard, for which I’ve always struggled to properly procure and cultivate. So, the question begs to be asked… Can you handlebar?

Beards are fickle things. As humans, we have evolved from a common ancestor to the ape, so it should be of little surprise that some of the evolutionary traits still linger. Especially when you consider how little time, in the grand scheme of life and this planet, that we’ve actually been ‘modern.’ Facial hair is among one of those lasting traits that are slowly disappearing for some men of new generations, while others, depending on ancestry and lifestyle, are still feeling the effects of being a once fur-covered being.

While I’ve been blessed to not be among the furriest of men (think the late, great Robin Williams), I do have a pretty sporadic beard that likes to come in at full-beast mode within a few weeks from being clean shaved to where it’s damn near impossible to maintain the thing, to guide it to be what I want it to be, which includes being the furthest point away from that vagrant, homeless look that it so desires to achieve. The other issue is that I have an undesirable patch on one cheek that doesn’t grow in as well as the rest of the beard. So, what do I do?

You might be wondering what I mean by, ‘Can you handlebar?’ Well, upon making up my mind that I would indeed work hard to tame this whacky beard, I reached out to the folks at Can You Handlebar for help and they sent me their Advanced Kit featuring their Wisdom scent (woodsy aroma with cedar, lemon and spruce). Their Advanced Kit includes a bottle of beard oil (for conditioning), beard balm (for conditioning and styling), beard oil brush, two moustache waxes (primary and secondary), as well as a red handkerchief.

What I’ve been learning is how important it is to wash and oil your beard often, because without proper cleanliness, your pores can be blocked, and without proper conditioning, your beard will grow stale, dry and itchy, and will become a bother rather than a pleasant personal growth experience. To grow a full beard, you must learn to train it, and to train it, you must use a variety of botanicals throughout the differing stages of growth. For example, in the beginning, simply combing it several times a day with the application of a light amount of beard oil will suffice, but as your beard turns into a hedge monster on your face, you need to employ a variety of other tactics, like beard balm which helps to shape the manginess while also conditioning. A big issue for new beard growers is the wry moustache, which tends to grow down over your lip so when you drink a liquid or eat something, you’re dealing with a dirty ‘stache and one that will look increasingly bad if gone untreated, so that’s where moustache wax comes in, so you can train the hairs to the side, and away from covering your upper lip.

Stimulating the hair follicles is as important as hygiene. Imagine spending your days with little to no exercise… What happens to your muscles? You lose them, right? Well, the same goes for hair. If you ignore combing your beard, it isn’t only the style and look that will suffer, it will be your growth as well, which is why CYH’s beard oil brush is so handy (made of wood and horsehair). All in all, I found Can You Handlebar’s products to be pleasant to work with, and affective at managing my beard as well as promoting growth. Not only does their wisdom scents smell amazing, they actually work. After a few short weeks of trialing their kit, my beard looks healthier, shinier, thicker, and is starting to come together, better than ever before.
