The climate allows for ample growing opportunities unlike Ohio, yielding some of the most gorgeous residential gardens I’ve seen, along with some of the best local foods. I’m not being hyperbolic either, because the culinary scene is colorful and of excellent quality everywhere I went. Arcata boasts the absolute finest farmers market I’ve been to, they have fantastic sushi restaurants and they offer much variety when it comes to vegetarian dining.
I had the wonderful opportunity to stay at the Rose Court Cottage in Arcata, thanks to my lovely hosts (and owners) Christy and Aldaron Laird. Rose Court Cottage is located a few blocks from the square of Arcata, across the street from a natural grocery store, which makes it an ideal spot to base out of. Christy and her husband maintain some of the best gardens in the entire city, with backyard trees, flower patches and a roof of seriously impressive bonsai trees. They’re not far from the redwoods, the ocean, or just about anything you might need. It was perfect for my recent and first time trip to the infamous California redwoods.
The Rose Court Cottage offers one room with private garden courtyard and keyed entrance with queen bed, sofa bed, kitchenette, private bath, down bedding, fireplace, WIFI, and television, among other amenities. I found everything to be simply wonderful. I loved walking through the cheery gardens, painted with every color of nature!
The bed was so comfortable that I slept like a log each and every night, thankfully. I hiked over 28 miles of Redwoods forest while in the area, so that was important for me to be able to keep up with my ten day non-stop adventure from San Francisco to Portland. You’d think staying in the middle of town would make for an uncomfortable stay at times with restless nights, but Arcata calms down at night and my room was perfectly quiet.
