The reason hemp has been such a hot topic as of late is because we are in the middle of a momentum shift, moving away from the stone aged mindset that cannabis sativa is a harmful drug and finally toward the intelligent perspective that hemp can do a whole lot of good. For decades, cannabis has been condemned, ostracized and full on smeared by corporate and political interests. But as the invention of the internet took hold like a wildfire, the truth has come out and the masses have moved toward learning that cannabis has a myriad of uses and benefits.
| While most people will think of the drug properties when they hear cannabis or hemp, there are some important details to understand, because hemp is not a drug. As a drug, THC (the psychoactive cannabinoid found in the female flowers) and CBD (the non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the stalks) has since been proven as two of the most versatile medicinal compounds on the planet. For instance, CBD has been found to have inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, as well as sedating, hypnotic, anti-epileptic and anti-dystonic effects, among other healing attributes. CBD does not ‘get you high,’ as they say, but it will relax you, soothe pain, help regulate sleep patterns, control certain cancers, stimulates bone growth, and stops the growth of bacteria, as well as it suppresses muscle spasms and convulsions, slows inflammation, reduces blood sugar levels, reduces the risk of artery obstructions, decreases pressure in the blood vessel walls, helps control epileptic seizures, reduces risk of nerve damage, and eases nausea. THC has a long list of applications as well, but as we await further legalization, it is outlawed in many states around the US. Now, hemp is a different animal because it’s not used as a drug, but is a very valuable fiber because the plant grows fast and the fibers are among the most durable in the world. Hemp fibers are so strong that they can place cotton canvas, metal, glass, as well as cotton denim, with other industrial uses. The fine folks over at iLoveBad Organics understand. I had the pleasure to try out their socks, a pair of boxer briefs and their amazing dog bed, which is pictured here with the cutest pup in the world, my Cali. The dog bed perhaps a bit over-the-top for pouches who maybe don’t deserve it, but when you love your dogs as if they were your own kids, as I do, then nothing is too much for them. Not only is the dog bed made of hemp, organic cotton, french linen, hemp denim and muslim, but it’s stuffed with organic kapok and natural rubber, which ends up working against the natural smells that tends to collect on their beds. Mainly, because hemp is antimicrobial, too. How cool is that?! Not only is it made of better, safer ingredients, but it’s also an anti-stink bed that’s all natural.
The boxer briefs are fitted, soft, and breathable, and are also made of organic cotton and hemp. Not that I push underwear beyond the one-a-day maximum limit, I do notice that upon summer’s hottest days, these work great at remaining fresher, longer. The socks are similar in this regard, because they offer a sweat-free and breathable sock experience that I’ve not found in other pairs, ever.
