Hemp Textiles: featuring Toad & Co

The world is changing all around us, many things for the worse and others for the better, while a lot still seems to be lost in flux. Where uncertainty runs rampant for many things, one positive trajectory is that of hemp, or cannabis. Not only are states legalizing the plant for medicinal use, but now that the USA has legalized industrial hemp, many products are being rejuvenated and industries changed. One such product are human textiles…

Consider how long humans have worked with cotton and other modern fabrics, and now think about how many people around the world have clothes, and now, contemplate how many outfits each human has worldwide. Or simply consider how many outfits each human has in just the US… The answer is a crap ton.

Billions of pieces of clothing go unworn, unused, and unloved, and I think it’s sad. For many reasons. Not only have many lives been hurt by this industry, but a ton of land has been turned into farmland, as well as much of our clothing ends up in landfills and thrift shops. Why not make clothing that will last? That’s what Toad & Co are focusing on, creating quality clothes with fabrics that are sustainable, like that of hemp.

Hemp is essentially every part of the cannabis plant that isn’t the female flowers, which is the demonized cannabinoid that gets users ‘high.’ The stalks and leaves of the hemp plant, typically the non-flowering male, can be employed in a seriously wide variety of avenues, like textiles, plastic, food, soap, rope, and fuel. The fibers grow fast and are among the strongest in the world, which means they can be made into just about anything, even paper.

I recently teamed up with Toad & Co, who specialize in sustainable outdoor wear, like shirts, shorts, pants, t-shirts, jackets, socks, day packs and more. Their new line is made of a wide range of hemp-made fabrics, and I had the chance to test and review a pair of pants, the Mission Ridge Lean Pant, and a shirt, the Taj Hemp Long Sleeve Shirt. The Taj shirt is made of 54% hemp, 44% tencel, and 2% spandex, and it feels good, cool, and flowy.

Overall, I was very impressed with both articles of clothing from Toad & Co. I love their style, look and feel, and of course the way they brand themselves. Their clothes are edgy, yet simple, while remaining modern and comfortable. But it’s the sustainable aspect that drives me the most toward supporting their ventures. I’m a big fan and you should check them out too!
