HOW TO: Find the best airfare prices on Kayak

First off, I’d like to start off by focusing on the point that cheap travel is possible - cheap airfare is also possible. BUT you must be able to have flexibility in dates and sometimes airports. If you are willing to bend more, then you can make your wallet bend less.
  1. Goto www.Kayak.com and make sure you are starting on the ‘Flights’ tab.
  2. Choose either ‘Round-trip,’ ‘One-way’ or ‘Multi-city.’
  3. Fill out the basic start information, ‘From’ and ‘To.’ At this point, usually a ‘Best Fares Found’ box will appear on the right side. As you change your fare information, the prices will adjust for your needs. The green highlighted prices are the best that Kayak can offer. I usually allow myself to be very flexible with my travels, so I can keep the overhead of my trip costs down. Sometimes I’ve noticed that simply changing one day for my trip can save me up to $1,000+.
4.  Check the ‘add nearby airports’ box. I typically only select this option on my second time through.
5.  Click ‘My dates are flexible’ and choose ‘Flex month.’ Fill out the ‘Nights at destination.’ This field doesn’t have to be solid just yet - you’ll see why shortly.
6.  Fill out the rest of the fields. For your ‘Depart’ date, I would chose the earliest possible date that you would like to leave - even if it’s a week from today, you may be pleasantly surprised.
7.  Note: If you choose the ‘nonstops only’ box, you will really be limiting your possible savings.
8.  I hate sponsored popups, so I usually just unclick all of the ‘Choose Sites to Compare vs KAYAK (new windows)’ - at least at first.
9.  If that little box that I mention in #3 didn’t load, then retype your ‘To’ destination, it will normally show up then.
10.  Now, simply flip through the months and play around with the variables to find the best deal for you. A lot of times my trips are to general areas or to an entire country where I will be touring around the majority of it, so I make sure to test other destinations for price drops. I was able to snag a round trip flight from Minneapolis to San Jan, Puerto Rico for under $300 this way.
11.  Find the best price that you can, then match it up against other travel websites. Typically, other airfare websites like Expedia, Travelocity and Priceline are all owned by the airlines in some form or another - I stay away from them as they are normally higher priced. So try obscure travel websites like Vayama and Skyscanner.
12.  Good luck - be patient.

Another good travel trip if you want to go on the cheap and get good local info, couchsurfing.org. Check it out. No fees of any type, unless you want to pay them ten bucks to verify you which is not necessary at all. I never did.
