If I had a million dollars

This article is more than just a list of what I wish I could do if money was no object in my life; it’s more than a song by the Barnaked Ladies. It’s a dreamers cry to just get it all out now, and maybe then I can concentrate on taking the steps in following my dreams.
And just to get this out of the way, I’m a humble person (who has had success and loss, like many others before me) and would live my life happily ever after with my family in a shack on an island or in a mountain. I’d have no problem surviving - thriving, even - as far away from civilization as possible, with its Apple stores, Ikeas and McDonalds’ on every block. I do understand that having money makes getting what you want way easier, but seriously, money doesn’t buy happiness. With that said, this article is just feeding my hungry thoughts of unproductive dreaming. (Photo by Andreii Vodolashskyi / iStock)

I’ve definitely been a citizen in the town of wishful thinking as of late. Selling everything I’ve accumulated over my lifetime and saving money has me thinking how much easier it would be to accomplish my dreams and to see nearly everything pinned on my world map if I already had the money. I’d also like to just mention that a million dollars isn’t exactly a fortune to last for generations, and saying what I’d do with a million dollars isn’t saying I’d hope for ONLY that much. ;-)  Alas I am just going with the cliche dollar amount preset in our culture as “making it” - and it works to get my points across.
First off, I’d like you to ask yourself this question - but think humbly and realistically, while keeping humanity in mind. Of course, obvious immediate answers usually are, take an island vacation - oh and right before that, quit my job comes first.
For me, after some real thought, (I believe a little in karma; not that it’s a real force, per say, but what goes around comes around describes it best for me) if I were simply given (or had won) a million dollars, I wouldn’t completely feel right unless I had used at least a large portion to help those who truly need it. I’ve dreamt of different ways that I would have the pleasure in doing this - through surprising the needier families (the honest, hardworking families who, no matter how hard they strive, they can never can make ends meat - along with single mothers), charities, churches and other organizations. I would probably focus my efforts toward hunger and medication for those who are not fortunate enough to have those needs fulfilled.
Beyond that, I would aid my friends and family with whatever needs they may have - I would repay my debts and treat those of who that have always been there to support me to some special surprises. Giving and spreading goodwill would be my main focus for majority of the funds. Perhaps setup a secure future for my future family, a small house, college fund and some investments.
After all that, I don’t know how much would necessarily be leftover, although I believe somewhere in all of that hoopla, I could finagle a little funding for me to have some fun - I think a trip around the world could be worked out. Yes, I know that sounds expensive - but the way I travel is relatively cheap. For example, I spent 3 weeks in and around the UK visiting 6 countries and only spent $1500-1800. What can I say - it’s a gift. In all honesty, I just travel as if I was living as a poor college student, at all times.
So what’s your first answer to how you would spent a large sum of money? The answer may surprise you and even tell you a little more about yourself.
