Keepin’ it classy while working as a writer on the move

Picture the iconic author. Is he tall? Does she command the room when she speaks? Do they have a drinking problem? Tell me, do you see a mustache? Perhaps you’re seeing Hemingway… When I see the iconic author, I see someone who has a special, sometimes strange, look in their eye. Why? Because they see the world differently than most. I also see someone who watches the world live around them, rather than being the one who does the living. I see a powerful artist, someone who can arrange words to create power. I see someone who is unique. Someone who commands the room.

Like most writers, I have envisioned myself as that person. And like most writers, we have each taken steps to fulfill this vision. Sure, not all writers are the same, and of course each artist has their own style, approach, and quirks, but there is a likeness in the way we see ourselves of the future. We are all hopeful, and hungry, and yet, we all suffer from the crippling self-doubt and fear of failure, that often defines the most successful, and the most troubled. But there is a likeness.

For me, I see my future self as a sort of Hemingway-esque person, who commands the room, who takes his readers and listeners to that place, to where my words eventually reach the level they need to be, to fully engage a reader’s mind, to put them in the world of my characters, to see and feel everything they themselves feel as words on the page. I see myself in a fine, bold, and empowering custom suit with that superior leather briefcase that all classic writers seem to carry. You know the one… A bit aged and scar-marked, and sometimes the leather had split with age and wear. Yet it has this regal quality about it. Like you can tell how important and deep and personal the words are on the pages it holds safe.

I’ve always wanted to become the author I’ve grown to envision. I haven’t invested in the perfect suit, and I’m still searching for the right words to complete my first novel, but I have found that iconic briefcase. There are all sorts of styles and makes out there. And with each tanner working the leather, the look and feel can vary greatly too as well. But for me, I finally found my iconic author’s bag, as every striving and starving writer should have. Of course, having or not having a bag is no deal breaker and will not define anyone as a writer, but it is part of that vision. And for that, I will cherish the Jay Modern Briefcase by Moore and Giles.

Why is this the perfect writer’s bag? It has that regal look and feel, and it has that wonderful smell of leather that will only be refined with use and age. It’s like a fine whiskey to me, something classic that is meant to be savored and appreciated slow and with meaning. The Jay Modern briefcase is as fine and high quality as any classic writer could want.

When I first had the opportunity to take it out for a spin, I stuffed the fine cloth and leather areas of the inside compartments with old business cards, a laptop, pens and notepaper, and finally, with my latest draft. Being without the matching suit could have been a bit of a downer, but I found the Jay Modern briefcase to work with any outfit. But I still felt like an author – albeit, a debut author. Someday, the feeling that I’ve written all there is to be said will come together with the material things, and I will know I’ve reached the place of my dreams… I can see it. It’s coming for my life, because I will make it happen. I can see it… Can you?
