The desire to achieve a manly beard is something most men run into at some point in their lives. For me, I was in my late twenties when I realized I wanted one but couldn’t. But with time, product, and a new regimen, I’ve noticed a major upsurge in thickness and health of my beard. For ages, I struggled with patchy growth and dryness that plagued me daily, and made it thoroughly unenjoyable to try and move through the bad stages of beard growing to where it looks and feels okay. But as the title suggests, proper beard regimen can go a long way.

To maintain a healthy beard, it takes a mixture of techniques that are quite basic, but are powerful in helping spur along beard growth. Without further ado, here it is, basic but effective: Wash your beard every other day, leaving one day to marinade in the oils that naturally appear on our skin and hair. When applying soap, conditioner, beard oil and balm, massage the product into the skin and hair, because it helps to stimulate new growth and helps toward proper hygiene which also helps growth (because your pores and follicles aren’t blocked). When drying, towel dry gently, leaving the beard slightly damp.

The next step is to work beard oil into your beard and skin, because the natural oils and essential oils within the oil will inspire new growth, while conditioning the hair, soothing itch and moisturizing the dry skin underneath. Then, optionally, you can apply a bit of beard balm, which is similar to beard oil in that it conditions the beard, but it also helps to maintain the wilder and unruly hairs. Then, as growth begins, you can start with grooming and shaping to your future goal length and style, but I like to see a professional for help there.

One of the recent companies that I’ve teamed up with to trial their products is Xtend Beard; who specialize in organic and 100% natural botanical products specifically made for beards. I tested their One beard oil and balm, as well as their Lumberjack and Black Amber flavors, and I found that each of them work really nicely in helping to cultivate, condition and inspire new growth.

The One beard oil and balm have an almost leathery fresh scent that I found to be quite intoxicating. The official aroma notes are Blond leather, Blood Orange & Mint with undertones of Cinnamon, Grapefruit, Rose and Patchouli, which makes for a wonderful blend of scents. The oil is made with Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, Apricot Kernel Oil, Avocado Oil, Castor Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Kukui Nut Oil, Vitamin E, and essential oils, while the balm includes Shea Butter, Mango Kernel Butter, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil and Beeswax. The balm is silky and melts in my hand instantly before applying it to my beard, which made it look healthier, shinier, and it helped it to feel soothing and thick, while maintaining the shape and aesthetic I was after.

The Lumberjack and Black Amber variations are similarly made, with many of the same carrier oils, butters and waxes, but what’s different is the essential oils, which directly provide a health benefit with each having their own properties and their own scents. The Lumberjack has a spicy, floral and forest scent that is simply wonderful. It’s made up of Cedarwood, Bergamot, Eucalyptus, and Pine. The Black Amber, my personal favorite scent by Xtend Beard, is a rich and sweet Amber and Black Cherry scent that I used in the mornings before heading out each day, because it acted as a sort of aromatherapy for me, creating a comforting atmosphere of scent just below my nose, while also acting as a replacement for my cologne; it’s that delectable. Overall, I found Xtend Beard’s products to be very well made, high quality in their ingredients and exceeding in my expectations with each and every use.
