Reigniting the flow state: Reviewing Beyerdynamic’s DT 880 PRO Studio Headphones and how they help me write

As a writer on the move, there are a few items I always travel abroad with, like my laptop for instance; without it, I’d be lost. The same goes for a solid pair of headphones. Not only am I a huge music enthusiast, but I am also a mood writer. When the mood is right, the words flow like silky smooth water over a mossy brook. And when it’s not, I suffer as my words suffer. I’ve developed a ritual now that helps me refocus myself and assists when I’m feeling disjointed and unproductive.

Sometimes when the words and the meaning elude me, I setup my laptop in a dark and quiet room, and write with a pair of over-ear headphones on. With atmospheric and chillstep tones oozing loudly through my head, I feel relaxed and I begin to refocus. I am able then to unlock whatever it was that was blocking the flow state. I don’t know why it works, but it works most of the time; perhaps the key is centering ones self by taking away the distractions. I don’t feel the same effect without the music, because when I simply sit in a dark room my creative flow state doesn’t start working, but it is when that beat and those atmospheric sound hits that my mind starts whirling.

The reason I love over-ear headphones is because they provide you with an enclosed, intense experience that allows for total concentration, or the ability to totally zone out, which I find useful in the more bustling, booming destinations around the world, because the right headphone can block out the sound of the city like no other. There are so many choices to a quality pair of headphones, from over-ear, on-ear, and open, closed, and beyond. If you don’t have to worry about a little sound bleeding out from your headphones, then I suggest a semi-open reference headphone that can duo as a studio headphone as well as for personal enjoyment listening.

I’ve tested a lot of big brands, but few live up to my expectations for overall high quality design and build, with optimum sound and power, but Beyerdynamic is one of those legendary brands in the music industry that sit atop a hill all on their own. I recently teamed up with the fine folks over at Beyerdynamic and have been asked to review their DT 880 PRO headphones. The DT 880 PROs are semi-open reference headphones, popularly used for monitoring in the studio, but they also have the capability to work well for personal listening and for when I am writing. Since they are reference-class, they have an analytical sound that provides the user with a wide range of high highs and deep lows, with a nice mid-range that gives the DT 880 PROs the capability of providing great sound for all genres of music.

Beyond the crisp, clean and powerful bass, the DT 880 PROs are built with comfort in mind. The ear pads are thick and cushioned, and ridiculously soft, which gives the user a very comfortable fit, which is assisted by the padded leatherette headband. The overall build is strong and rugged, which helps for longevity while traveling. The semi-open headphone has a diffuse-field and are powered at 250 ohms. While the Beyerdynamic doesn’t include a hardshell case for the DT 880 PROs, which is my only criticism, it does include a soft drawstring bag, which will help to keep these headphones dry and hopefully scratch free. I found the Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro reference-class headphones to sound great, look sharp, and fit and feel even better.
