A mere 30-minute drive from the mystical Olympic National Park of Washington state is a small seaside town known for their cultivation of gorgeous lavender flowers, as well as for the Dungeness crab. As you drive around town and the surrounding areas, you are hit with just how beautiful fields of lavender are. As an herbalist, I am fascinated by this medicinal herb, and know it as one of my all-time favorites. I recently ventured through Sequim and the surrounding areas, and very much enjoyed the coast, the lavender fields, and the small attractions the town has to offer. While somewhat dwarfed by the draw of Olympic National Park, Sequim is among one of the few gateway towns to the park and is a perfect starting place for anyone looking to enjoy old growth forests, rocky coastlines, and snowcapped mountains.
On a day when I was waiting for the clouds to clear from Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, I went on a drive through the agricultural coastal area between Port Angeles and Sequim, stopping at a few lavender farms to tour their essential oil production facilities, and trying out their everything-made-of-lavender offerings, thoroughly enjoying myself I might add, before making my way through Dungeness, beyond the lighthouse, and around to Sequim town. I stopped for breakfast at the Mariner Cafe, and was pleasantly surprised by how damn good the food was. The Mariner Cafe can be found at 609 W Washington Street, Sequim, Washington 98382.
The Mariner Cafe is open breakfast, lunch and through dinner time, offering a wide range on their menu, from breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, and a variety of seafood and homestyle dinners. I was torn between a sugary treat for breakfast and a savory favorite of mine, which is what I opted for in their corned beef hash, eggs and English muffin. The staff was lovely, and kind with warm smiling eyes, and the food came out fast in under ten minutes and was cooked to perfection.
They nailed the eggs, and the corned beef hash was absolutely delicious. I regularly make it at home, but they do something special to their corned beef hash and I buzzed through that meal like a desert man with a dry throat discovering an oasis after a long journey. It was wonderful and I am still kicking myself for not having enough time to stop by for dinner. I will definitely stop back next time I’m in the area, because this is a lesser known gem in the Sequim area, and the atmosphere brings you back home like only a local diner could.
