For decades, I dreamt of experiencing the old growth forests of Washington, with the massive trees reaching skyward, air plants hanging from every branch, and blankets of moss littered with fungi. Being from Ohio, we have some lovely forests, but they’re all young growth due to human’s clearcutting everything. The trees in Ohio are toddler trees, and I yearned to see land undisturbed by human presence. The years of the pandemic put me off, but after things calmed down, I made sure Washington was the first place I’d visit after the excruciating time off from travel.
After a week of adventuring around Washington’s famous Olympic peninsula, I spent a day around Mt. Rainier, before heading north to a lesser visited but damn near equally as beautiful area known as the North Cascades. I stayed in the small town of Concrete before going to the park, where I hiked some of the old forests, explored the overlooks, and lakes. The weather was stellar with no rain, some wind, lots of sunshine and low humidity, and the views were epic with huge skies of moody clouds, turquoise lakes, and a few snow-capped mountains. It was a perfect day to be in the great outdoors, breathing in that fresh air, soaking up the sun, and simply melding with the natural world of the North Cascades.
One evening, I found myself back near by accommodation 40-minutes from the park at a local gem known as the Birdsview Diner. Birdsview Diner is a cool spot with a happening outdoor presence, where top quality unique burgers are served by a lovely staff of kind ladies. The owner Heidi is a kind, fun-loving visionary who has transformed this local dining hotspot, from a failing diner with an overgrown lot, to now what it is today, a thriving creative burger joint with an awesome outdoor entertainment area with picnic tables, a live event stage, and loads of games for the whole family set underneath a woodland area beneath huge pines. Birdsview Diner is known for their unique gourmet burgers like their Blackberry burger which has bacon, Swiss cheese and blackberry compote, or the Bacon Mac & Cheese burger which has mac and cheese grilled into a patty form with bacon, cheese and chipotle. I tried the later burger and it was damn good. They also have fish, salads, pie, milkshakes and cinnamon rolls, much more. I ordered the Mac & Cheese burger with fries and a Huckleberry shake, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The burger was meaty and juicy, the bacon thick and smokey, and flavorful, and the mac and cheese brought it together into a crispy, cheesy paradise of flavors. The fries were perfectly cooked, crispy outside and soft inside, with just the right amount of salt. Fries are a forgotten art these days it seems at times, and the Birdsview chefs have it down. All in all, I was very impressed with the atmosphere, the crew, and of course the dining experience was top notch for an affordable roadside meal in a stunning place.
