A few minutes outside the northern section of the famous Olympic National Park, Port Angeles is a seaside town with a lot to do and see, and loads of unique shopping opportunities, as well as restaurants that are as good as anybody could want. Olympic National Park is known for its stunning untouched old growth forests, stellar mountain views, and fantastic hiking, as well as a few rocky coast adventures worth having. Spending 3-4 or 5 days in and around the park will yield an experience of a lifetime, but what’s more is that Port Angeles is worth adding a day on to any trip for.

Port Angeles offers a range of experiences like day trips to Hurricane Ridge, Hoh Rainforest, or Cape Flattery, but in the town itself, there’s opportunities to take whale watching tours off the coast, eat at talented restaurants, and shop in their artsy downtown strip. Just outside of town, you will find a wineries, lavender farms well worth visiting, and tons of natural experiences like a lovely hike to Marymere Falls (which was one of my favorite easy hikes in the area) and a chance to wander around beautiful Lake Crescent. Port Angeles is a gateway town to the mystical Olympic region of Washington and is a perfect starting place for anyone looking to enjoy old growth forests, rocky coastlines, and snowcapped mountains.

A couple weeks ago, I had the amazing opportunity to adventure around the Olympic peninsula and after a long day of lavender fields, hiking in the mountains, and wandering through old growth forests untouched by man, I felt my belly rumble and so I sought out to try one of Port Angeles’ premier eateries. I ended up at Spruce Restaurant, which is described as a down-home restaurant with local menu featuring burgers and fried bites, plus craft cocktails and beer. Upon entering Spruce, it feels like a dive bar that embraced its American origins and instead of trying to be what it’s not, found a way to get creative and artsy with their aesthetic as well as their menu. It feels a bit small, and there’s often a line to get a table in the evenings, especially on the weekends, but it’s well worth the wait. You can find Spruce Restaurant at 128 E Front St, Port Angeles, WA 98362, or online at www.spruceportangeles.com.

Spruce offers a menu of regional-sourced burgers, plant-based entrees, small plates, salads, sides and more. I opted for one of their burgers and was excited to see the ingredient list included Oregon co-op beef, applewood bacon and nearby Tillamook cheddar, which I often buy from a local grocery in Ohio. Upon the first juicy bite, I knew this was an epic burger. It had top quality ingredients and that ever important detail came through with each and every delectable bite.

You can taste the care they put into the preparation of my meal. The cheese was delicious and creamy, and the bacon was thick, smokey, meaty and crispy with a satisfying gush of fat. I hate when bacon turns into a potato chip consistency without any of the fatty goodness, and these chefs know their art and respected the art of cooking bacon properly. The fries were a marriage of perfection as well, bringing flavor and crisp together into its own mesmerizing experience of flavor and experience. All in all, I couldn’t even reach to try and find something that wasn’t perfectly performed by Spruce and their staff. Hats off to their entire crew and kitchen staff.
