As with any style of travel, weight and volume matter a great deal when you’re packing your bags, especially if you’re a backpacker like me. One of the most popular items that travelers struggle with during travel is taking along a pair of quality headphones. One time, on my third trip to Europe, I thought I could get away with a big, bulky over-ear set of headphones, but after the first day of venturing around Barcelona, I had to mail them back home, because they took up way too much space, and I had to make a choice between my clothes and the headphones. So, throughout that trip I stuck with a cheap in-ear, wired set of earbuds. I prefer to be surrounded by sound and oozing bass, and no earbuds have ever truly pulled that off, until I heard the Byron BTA Wireless model by Beyerdynamic.
Earbuds sometimes get a bad rap, because majority are made so cheaply that they have little to no audible range of dynamic sound, nor balance between highs, mids and lows. When I’m writing, I prefer a wide range of sound, so it’s almost as if I’m floating among a sea of atmospheric music, because for some reason it helps me block out all external stimuli and helps me to concentrate on the ideas floating through my head. But that’s impossible with earbuds… Or so, I had thought.
Beyerdynamic is one of the finest personal and professional sound engineering companies, and like most audio companies, they have recently made the shift into producing earbuds, or in-ear headsets, rather. I had the pleasure of testing out the Byron BTA Wireless in-ear headset by Beyerdynamic, and I have to say that the quality of the design and sound surprised me. They are indeed wireless, besides the wire connecting both earbuds together, which also duos as the battery charger and audio control. Most bluetooth headphones and external speakers are a bit of a pain to operate, as they often struggle to connect and pair properly, but the Byron BTAs were perfect, connecting in less than three seconds the first time.
Connecting via Bluetooth, the Byron BTA Wireless earbuds transmit music and phone calls with ease, giving you flexibility and quality sound. The battery inside the headset cable is a high-performance rechargeable that can power the earbuds up to 7.5 hours, charging by way of USB port in less than 90-minutes. The Byron BTAs are equipped wth a 3-button control and hands-free microphone for use with Apple and Android calls and playback.
One of the biggest issues I run into with earbud style headphones is that they either typically don’t stay in, or they are awfully uncomfortable. After first wearing the Byron BTAs, it was apparent that the designers had these issues in mind, as they are indeed more comfortable than most, providing three different sizes of silicone eartips which provide the user a range of sound and bass, and fit, as well as a pair of ear hooks, just in case you need an extra stable foundation to hold them to your ears.
Now, the most important part… The SOUND. As I mentioned earlier, I’ve not been impressed with the sound coming from almost any in-ear headset, but the Byron BTAs are a special breed of earbud. The sound coming from such small sound pieces was impressive to say the least. I wouldn’t necessarily put it up there with the dynamic quality of most over-ear headphones, but they stand head and shoulders over any other earbuds I’ve tried out. Music came through crisp and clean, and was capable of playing loudly. The bass, which is so often inexistent in earbuds, was solid; perhaps, not booming or oozing, but solid indeed. Overall, I found the Byron BTA Wireless in-ear headset by Beyerdynamic to be a great option for travelers who are worried about size and weight, while ensuring sound quality. They are quality earbuds with a strong, clean and balanced sound, that give the user powerful sound in a very small package.
