For the backpacker, camper, and adventure enthusiast, having the right kind of reliable gear on you can make all the difference in the world between life and death. You never know what might befall you when out in the wilderness, from a simple fall to an animal attack. But no matter the circumstances it’s always best to plan ahead. One of the best pieces of equipment to pack for any wild jaunt is a true survival blade.
Back in my home state of Ohio, flint arrowheads are hot finds for curious collectors and history buffs alike. Sharpened flint was what native people’s used to evolve and adapt in the wilderness. They used them to hunt, skin their kills, and make fire, among countless other activities. Now, if you’re stranded out in the wilderness, without a blade, you can shape a rock to mimic a knife, but you won’t be nearly as successful. Where else can you find a natural blade that can help you survive even the worst situations?

They recently sent me their SIWI #2082 blade which is a small fixed blade, perfect for carrying on ones belt, in a pocket, or in a backpacker’s rucksack since it’s relatively low weight for how strong it’s crafted.

The SIWI was designed by a retired Sergeant Major by the name of Darrin Sirois, who channeled 25 years of active duty into the creation of his original design. It’s a compact fixed blade with a glass reinforced nylon sheath that fits snug, holds the blade tight and safe in a hard casing. The blade is made of SK5 Carbon Steel with a black powder coat finish and the handle is G10, measuring at an overall length of 7.438”, and a blade length of 3.341”, which weighs in at a lightweight 5.6 ounces.
Overall, the quality of the SIWI is immediately apparent, as the handle fits snugly and ergonomically in-hand, giving the user the ability to work with precision, which is always an important feature when it comes to handling a blade as sharp as this. The thickness of the blade provides the user with a lot of years of hard use. The sheath feels high end, offering optimum safety features, along with a quality belt buckle accessory piece.
