Review: Garmont's Dragontail MNT GTX shoes

Finding the perfect hiking shoe can take a few buys until you discover what you like and what works best for you. It can also be quite dependent upon where you are traveling in the world, because the terrain and climate will dictate the features, tread, fabric, style and build of the shoe. As a travel writer, I’ve gone through my fair share of trekking shoes and more. Today, I’d like to talk about a certain shoe that I found as being one of my favorites (and most reliable) so far.

I’ve beat up a lot of shoes over the years of traveling the world and so I believe I can appreciate a solid shoe… I spent nine months in Europe with a single pair of shoes, only to destroy them two weeks before the trip ended as I made my way through the Isle of Skye in Scotland. I ripped the top off a particular thin, airy shoe in the Snowy Mountains of Wyoming. I’ve soaked high-tops with mud and manure, trying to get the perfect photo in Iceland. And I’ve had them stolen, along with my bag, in Puerto Rico.

So, today, I thought it would be nice to illuminate you as to my current shoe – until it meets its doom… At the moment, I wear the Garmont Dragontail MNT GTX.

This is my first pair of Garmonts, but the moment they arrived, I could tell they would last me, perhaps my longest stretch to date. Hopefully, anyway! They are built to last with a thick, strong shell that snuggly fits your foot and holds it in place. I found zero slipping or rubbing, and only the slightest bit of friction on my foot the first time I wore them, even after several hours of use.

The Goretex provides a snug fit with the ability to air out moisture. And if you’ve ever been on long, hot treks, you know how invaluable that feature can be. However, beyond fit, the structure of the shoe and the materials used are high quality and as I said, built to last. The tread itself is deep and designed for gripping basic to rough terrain, and after my first go around with the Dragontail MNT GTXs, I fell in love with the tread. Because this shoe fits as an extension of my foot, and with the style and quality of of the tread, I was able to maneuver over boulders and rough, steep terrain without issue.
