For most travelers, especially backpackers, carrying a pair of headphones can become cumbersome, or risky, because most modern headphones aren’t built to withstand the rigors of travel. I’ve spent most of my travel experience as a backpacker, where each ounce matters a great deal, so I’ve never had the pleasure of taking a full set of headphones with me abroad. And since everything I have with me must fit in a rucksack and be held up by my back and shoulders, I am always forced to choose a small, rollup pack of cheap earbuds, which, let’s be honest, are awful sounding and do nothing to keep the external noise at bay.
Today, more and more sound engineering companies are refining their product styles, and are producing better headphones that are both smaller and wireless. Wireless headphones connect via bluetooth, to your device or laptop, and can save a ton of room, because they tend to be smaller, and require no hassling with wires. Not only is is an amazing experience to turn up the tunes on a nice pair of headphones and simply fade out, as it can be quite an experience, but for me, it’s an even more impressive experience to lock myself up in a black room and write. There’s just something atmospheric about being alone with my words, with a pair of headphones on my head. The bass is booming, the sound is encapsulating, and it’s just me and my thoughts. Some of my best writing happens in that environment. And so, when I travel abroad, I like to zone out from the hustle and bustle of modern civilization, and just be. It’s a beautiful thing.
The well-known personal audio crafters, Harman Kardon, have created their version of the wireless headphone, the Soho Wireless, and from my experience in testing them, I’ve come away impressed. They describe the Soho Wireless as a “refined sound quality in a stylish, easy-to-use headphone with the added convenience of Bluetooth-enabled connectivity.” Not only do the Soho’s provide you with great sound in such a small pair of on-ear headphones, but they give the user the freedom of movement, which as a traveler, can be a pure blessing. Because like most travelers, the commute is the time when I implement headphones the most, since when I’m on and off the bus, the plane, etcetera, I want to make the trip an easy one, so often times I’ll fade out to music or an audio book, and not pay attention until the trip has concluded.
The Soho Wireless design is sleek and modern, with its stainless steel body and sliders, and stitched black leather ear pads which provide optimum fit and comfort, which I found perfect for long commutes. Unlike most headphones, the Soho’s fold flat and fit into an ultra-slim pouch, which is a godsend for backpackers, who care about every ounce and item burdening their backs and shoulders. One of the coolest features about these headphones is the touch-sensitive controls, designed into the ear-cup, allowing you to totally control the music. I found Harman Kardon’s Soho Wireless on-ear headphones to be a fantastic, eye-catching design, built for travelers. The sound quality is really good, the bass is nice, and the physical features of the headphones are well thought out and well designed. After some testing and travel time, I came away impressed with the Soho Wireless headphones; in every facet they exceeded my expectations.
