Review: Marpac’s Dohm Classic White Noise Machine for Better Sleep

If it’s not my back or neck being in discomfort or pain, it’s dehydration or noise or stress that keeps me from experiencing a full night’s sleep. It may be one of the awful realities of getting older, as well as it may be equally true that with the hustle and bustle of the modern lifestyle that anxiety and stress in the subconscious may be affecting me. When you’re young and you wear yourself out, sleep comes as naturally as breathing for many, as it did when I was young, but now-a-days I must prepare myself for a proper night of sleep, which includes drinking plenty of water, making sure the bedroom is cool and my pillow fluffed enough, among other things.

As of late, I’ve worked in audio books to soothe me into sleep, and I often meditate to either help me ease off initially or to aid me when I awake in the middle of the night. Audio books work on a number of levels, because for me being a light sleeper, any creek or crackle of noise can bring me out of even my deepest of slumbers. They also work nicely because they keep my mind off of anything that might be troubling me in my mind. But there is also a flip side to using an audio book as a sleep aid, in that if the book is good enough, it might keep you up half the night because you’re much too interested in the content.

So that’s why I reached out to Marpac, the makers of specialty bedding and sleep aids like the Dohm Classic and they sent me a free review copy of their white noise machine to feature here. Essentially, the Dohm is a sound conditioner that works with, in my opinion, what soothes us deep inside, to help promote quality sleep. The noise the Dohm makes is a mix of swirling wind and atmospheric sounds that I found to be soothing, almost as if I were sleeping in a tent in the mountains where high winds were swirling overhead above the peaks; similar to what sounds I heard when I camped in Medicine Bow, Wyoming.

The Dohm works easy enough, as you plug it in, turn it on high or low, and then twist the circular device until you find the sound that works best for you. The Dohm is assembled in the USA, and it comes in there color options, and even a model made for babies. All in all, as I tested the Dohm Classic, incorporating it into my sleep pattern, I found it to be quite relaxing. The device uses a fan-based white noise that eased me into sleep while masking most of the background noise that had plagued me recently. Similar to how listening to nature sounds (waves, birds, rivers, etc.) promotes a natural atmosphere for an easy sleep. I don’t really have any to criticize, as it’s a simple device that performs as advertised.
