When it comes to the perfect pair of sunglasses for traveling, it all depends on what you will be doing and where you’re planning to go. Because if you’re going on an African safari, I’m guessing you will need a specific pair of sunglasses and lens polarity for the environment there. And the same is true if you travel to Scandinavia or Japan, or New Zealand. All around the world, there are different lights, and different environments. If you’re hiking the wilderness and camping in Norway, you will want specific gear, and the same goes for sunglasses.
I noticed the difference the most, when I came overseas to backpack Europe and Northern Africa; I had a weak, wire-frame pair of sunglasses that were barely living up to the stresses and demands I made while traveling through burning hot Spain during the first month. But when I hopped on a plane for southern Morocco, which isn’t THAT far from Spain, I noticed a totally different sun. Perhaps it’s because the atmosphere is thinner, or because most of Morocco is desert, but the sun pierced those weak, cheap sunglasses and made my first day rougher than it needed to be.
Now, when I travel, I pick a certain pair of sunglasses based on where I’m going, and how physically demanding the trip might be. This may seem arbitrary, but it is one of the many details I weigh before I head abroad. Recently, I’ve tested several top brands of wooden sunglasses, but very few metal framed sunglasses, so today I wanted to feature the famous Maui Jim brand.
Maui Jim is a hip company that specializes in making high quality sunglasses that are perfect for most destinations. Their frames are strong and well crafted, as are the lenses, which I found to be much more powerful at shading my eyes from especially bright light. Their polarization is top quality, and my eyes are grateful for that. One of their more flashy models is the Freight Trans sunglasses, which are a thin metal and plastic frame, crafted very well for optimum aesthetics, as well as functionality. The Freight Trans lenses are colored a subtle silver and grey at the top and bottom, with a darker blue in the middle of the lens, which provides a striking look and style for onlookers, and a powerful blue-grey-green tone from behind the lens.
The Freight Trans sunglasses by Maui Jim are very high quality, and are versatile enough that they can be used in extreme visual environments as well as for casual use. I find the design to be subtle, classy, manly, and eye catching, with its dark frames, clean look and feel, and the gradient faded lenses that add a bit of color and tone which push this simple design over the top (in a good way. Nay! A great way.). The frames are built strong, retaining the much needed flexibility, while the hardware is sleek and strong, adding a firm foundation for long lasting shades; which, as far as quality goes in this day and age, is a true (and welcome) rarity.
