Review: OtterBox’s UnlimitEd iPad Case

As a modern tech traveler, I bring my devices everywhere. If I’m photographing a remote location, I’ve typically got my laptop, hard drives, tablet, and phone with me, among a few other choice pieces of gear, and so it’s always very important to ensure I’ve taken safety precautions for each. I’ve been in another country and had my rental car broken into and my gear stolen, and I’ve been caught in the rain on more than on occasion. Things happen, and you have to be prepared if you don’t want to lose your precious electronics and the data on them.

Now, having learned the hard way many times, I carry a special waterproof pack and I outfit most of my gear in hardshell cases where possible, as well as in waterproof sacks, because you truly never know when disaster might strike. Every hard drive is stored in a waterproof sack, every device is stored in a shockproof, waterproof case, as is my laptop and tablet. I’ve lost precious images that were never seen by another human, because of a freak accident. It happens, and it sucks, and it’s heartbreaking.

For your next trip, think ahead… Can you weather an unforeseen storm? What will you do if you run into bears, and they smell that candy bar in your pack? Do you have your gear secured enough to handle a topple? Is your tablet in a hard case? What about your phone? Is it secure in an air-tight, water proof case? Are your hard drives stored in a waterproof sack? Have you thought of all the things that could go wrong and prepared for each? It may sound like a lot of worry for nothing, but the moment when you have your first fail and realize you could have prepared better is the moment when you learn a hard lesson, as I have countless times.

Now-a-days, I travel not harder but smarter. One of my favorite companies is the famed Otterbox, who specializes in some of the best hardshell cases in the world for all sorts of devices. I recently reached out to Otterbox to feature their UnlimitEd Hardshell case for the iPad (5th and 6th generation), which is engineered to meet the unique requirements of K-12 classrooms. So if their case can survive violent drops, perhaps being thrown, juice being spilled on it, and whatever else a poor tablet can be subjected to by children, then I’d say that’s a damn good place to start.

Otterbox’s UnlimitEd case is very slim and snug fitting, allowing for ergonomic use of the tablet, without bulking up the sides, nor the weight of the overall device. It’s clear so you can see clearly through to the screen as well as through to the back of the tablet. You can throw the tablet in a backpack and not have a second worry about it.

The UnlimitEd case is made of polycarbonate, synthetic rubber, and polyurethane, and it’s engineered for serious drop protection, though I doubt it could handle a several story drop, of course. Within reason, is the key. The case design provides a built-in screen protector, as well as an integrated stand that adjusts for typing, viewing angles, and can sit up so as to be used as a mini television. Very cool feature, indeed. It’s slim, clean, crisp, and takes nothing away from Apple’s ultimate iPad experience. Overall, I found installation to be easy and overall I’m very impressed with the design as it brings a lot of security to an expensive and dynamic device, without adding much weight or space, because as a backpacker and light traveler, I like to be mobile and carry everything on my back, so every ounce and inch counts.
