A handy, reliable compass is a necessity for every camper, backpacker, and survivalist, and compasses by Silva are some of the best models on the market. Recently, I've had the opportunity to try out the CL Hi-Vis model, and it essentially saved by butt this past weekend.

Over the Halloween weekend, my best friend from Ohio, who lives in California now, flew in for our joint-birthday celebration of camping in the woods. We roamed through Northern Colorado, and ended up settling down in Red Feather Lakes – a beautiful, lesser developed area of the front range Colorado Rocky Mountains. My buddy was immediately impacted by the cold weather – typical, right? Californians don't know how to deal with anything chillier than 70-degrees – am I right? haha.
As the sun was setting, we decided to enjoy a final hike on the first evening of our trip. We wandered in various directions, not paying attention to any sort of path, or direction, besides that I had my trusty Silva compass in my pocket. I checked it from time to time, to be sure that I knew the way back to our campsite. I figured it would become quite dark when night set in, but we didn't anticipate it to be so bloody blacked out. The moon was to be full for the perfect spooky Halloween weekend, but the mountains that peaked around us blocked out the moon's light until closer to midnight.
So we were wandering through the woods, almost blind from the lack of light, until I shined the light from my phone onto the Silva CL Hi-Vis and off we were, back the direction we came. I was a bit weary at first, but all worked out well in the end. To be honest, if we didn't have a solid compass with us, we likely would have had to make due sleeping in the woods, in the start of winter, and who knows, perhaps we may not have even made it through the night.

Anyway, I won't try and appear as though I am an expert with compasses or any survival gear, really, but from my experience with this bad boy this past weekend, I can say that I will continue to work with and continue putting my life in the hands of Silva. The CL Hi-Vis is built to last, works smoothly and reliably, and is packed full of helpful and essential features and gauges to assist anyone for any wilderness, recreational, or survival need.
