As an avid traveler and tech geek, my travel preferences might seem extreme to some, but I’ve learned from many times around the globe that if you don’t prepare before, you will pay later. I’ve been robbed in Puerto Rico, broke a camera lens in Nevada, pick pocketed in Scotland, and I’ve severely injured my phone at the Grand Canyon. It happens.
So now, after much experience with the whims of fate, I’ve decided to circumvent and prohibit where possible. I travel smarter, and I prepare smarter. I work when I travel and travel when I work, because my laptop goes everywhere with me, which allows me to work from anywhere in the world, so long as I have occasional internet connection. Ten years ago, I don’t know if you could travel and make a lifestyle out of working abroad like I do now.
The result of being a tech traveler is that I have to carry all sorts of gear everywhere I go, because not only am I a blogger and designer, but I’m also a photographer who specializes in travel photography and landscape photography. So on any given trip, I’ve got a rucksack packed to the brim with computer, hard drives, camera, lenses, memory cards, tablet, and more, on top of my clothing, toiletries, survival gear, camp gear, and beyond. Seriously, the packing list before each trip is daunting.

All of my devices must have proper cases and security, because there are often times where I put my gear in danger, like when I drop my pack or am caught in a downpour. So I outfit each in a hardshell case preferably, and then most are stored in a thin waterproof sack that rolls up at the top. Nothing is worse than taking amazing photos from some off-the-beaten track spot and come to find your hard drive is ruined from the weather. That’s an awful, brutal, and gut-wrenching feeling that everyone should avoid if at all possible.
I recently reached out to Skech to test and feature one of their iPad and iPhone cases. For the iPad, they sent the Flipper Prime, which is a plastic backed case with folio-type front cover. For my iPhone 7+, the fine folk at Skech sent their Polo Book, which is a versatile phone cover that marries case with wallet. Both were packaged very well, very professionally, and upon first inspection, both cases look very sharp and well made.
The Skech Flipper Prime for iPad 9.7” (2017/2018) is a folio style case with a detachable smart cover, which unlocks and locks the tablet when you open and close the foldable front cover. The Flipper Prime has a brilliant raised corner design that boosts overall protection so that it’s shockproof. The back is a transparent hard plastic shell that provides access to buttons and charging port, and is pretty damn strong. It has a slight flex in it when I try, but overall, I’m pretty impressed. The flex is important, however, for getting the tablet in and out with relative ease. The black smart cover is magnetic, allowing for it to snap shut over the iPad screen as well as when you open it and fold the cover along its two folds, so that it becomes it’s own stand which is a beautiful feature for watching television.
The Skech Polo Book for iPhone is a versatile design that bridges the gap between phone case and wallet, which to me is a great idea that Skech’s team pulled off perfectly. The case adds a bit of weight, but a lot of class. The black leather is sharp and very well made. The design works as planned, providing four slots for cards and cash, and a strong overall build to protect my beloved iPhone. It has a third feature, which is a viewing stand, which sounds nice but doesn’t work as seamless as I would have liked, though, with time it works smoother. What’s more is that the inner case that holds your phone inside is attached to a hefty little magnet, so the case is removable and can simply be mounted on any magnetic car mount, or whatever. All in all, I found Skech’s products to be top of the line, built smart and built to last.
