One of the most comfortable items to take with you when you camp is also one of the most lightweight and easy to pack, which makes it a perfect addition for backpackers and wilderness trekkers alike. When you must live and die by the weight and volume of your pack, like what all backpackers must experience, then every ounce and every inch matter greatly. It’s difficult to travel luxuriously while camping, and it’s even more difficult if you’re backpacking. Over the years, I’ve found ways to make life easier when abroad, while also cutting down on the aches and pains that my back and shoulders must go through for such creature comforts
One of the favorite gear additions is a quality hammock. I love hammocks, because they are wicked comfortable, help with my back and my ability to sleep sound in the natural world. But also because most hammocks fold up and store in tiny, lightweight packages, which can be easily installed inside my pack along with my compression bags and other storage systems that provide me the ability to travel with more in less volume space.
I’ve only recently discovered one of my favorite models of hammocks, and that would be the TechNest Hammock by Eagles Nest Outfitters. ENO is a well-known brand for most outdoor enthusiasts, because they produce a range of quality gear and their hammock and suspension system (which I’ll get into later) is among the best, which is the case for a lot of their gear. What makes the TechNest hammock unique is because they are optimized for a lightweight, yet luxurious experience.
The TechNest Hammock is a lightweight design, yet is a powerful and strong hammock. How can a hammock be powerful, you might say? Well, the TechNest can manage to hold two people at a 350lb. capacity, and it closes down into a 6”x4” dry sack with a very heavy duty carabiner mounted on top for easy external carry. The fabric that makes of the TechNest is a breathable, quick drying nylon, which has triple stitched seams. The full length of the hammock once suspended is 9’4”x6’2”, and weighs a meager 14oz. All of this crams into an attached compression stuff sack. But wait, there’s more. The TechNest Hammock was designed to go together with the Helios XL Suspension System, which in short is a heavy duty strap system made for suspending hammocks.
What the Helios XL does is provide you with an added layer of security and safety, because if you’ve never used or setup a hammock before, you will likely run into one or two near disastrous situations, like falling off, or the hammock completely dropping once you apply your weight. The Helios XL supports up to 400lbs, and is rated as tree friendly. Its straps are heavy duty polyester sling with Dyneema rope, and are a godsend for hammock safety; and they only add 6.5oz in an even smaller sack.
I found the TechNest Hammock and Helios XL Suspension System by Eagles Nest Outfitters to be a very solid and near luxury hammock, which I’ve implemented into my own travel pack, because it’s so damn soft and comfortable, and helps me with quick and comfy napping during physically exhausting trips into the wilderness. I think it’s perfect for backpackers and wilderness explorers, but also for individuals and couples who want to lay out and lounge in the sun or shade while on vacation. They are built very well, and seem to me to be very long lasting.
