Road Tripping Is The Ideal Way To Experience A Place

I’m a huge fan of road trips… HUGE FAN! Road tripping a destination, especially an international place is one of the most exciting, intimate, and interesting things you can possible do. You can come and go as you please, and you can go with the flow, staying in a place longer because you met really great locals, or you can move along if something doesn’t feel quite right.
I particularly love road tripping around whole countries, because of several reasons, really – it gives me the freedom to stop wherever I want, whenever I want, but as a photographer, that’s an invaluable freedom that I like to take advantage of as much as possible. Other reasons include that I really love to get lost, and to simply wander without a destination in mind, or a limited time I’ve got to be somewhere, and if I’m always hopping from bus to taxi to train, I will almost always miss a neat village, or a beautiful natural landscape scene.

I’ve had the lovely experience of traveling around several different countries along my nine-month trek through Europe, Northern Africa, and Iceland a few years back. However, there were so many other places that I wish I had more time in, so that I would have been able to see more of it. Unfortunately, I traveled by public transit for most of the first half of my trip, through Spain, Italy, Croatia, Germany, and Switzerland – all of which, I vow to revisit so that I can road trip around each country, with the intent of seeing as much as they have to offer, be it the different towns, landscapes, and people. Beyond the simply seeing, I wish to slow travel through a place, experiencing the local fare, the people, and coming to a better understanding of their cultures, beliefs, loves, and history, because without that then what is travel?

Places like Spain and France have so many different regions that have their own styles, cultures, foods, beliefs, and ways of living their lives. Plus, I think it would be so fascinating to be able to showcase an entire country in a photographic novel of sorts, featuring the differences and likenesses, and beauties from one end of the country to the other. To me, that would be a passion project of great importance.

I’ve road tripped through large swaths of the USA, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, and Iceland, and I have to say that Iceland has the most mesmerizing overall beauty of all the list, however Scotland is a close second. I know the USA and Canada have exceedingly lovely areas as well, and I definitely can’t forget to mention Ireland here, however, I will never forget the amazing experience of traveling around Iceland and Scotland, taking in all of their natural wonderment. The next time I’m back in the UK, I would like to work with a caravan company and do mainland all over again, because even though I’ve been to both twice before, I’ve always traveled via the public transport system – I feel like I’m missing so much! I mean, heck, there’s the Lake District, the Peak District, and then there’s all of the gorgeous and rough coastal regions, like Devon and Cornwall. All you gotta do is move from one amazing place to the next, park and pop out your caravan awning and you’re ready to see where the world takes you. There’s nothing as beautiful and as powerful as an open mind on the move.
