Securing your holiday money

Everyone loves a holiday – it doesn’t matter where it is, or for how long (although sometimes it never seems long enough!) but it is great to get away for a while. You can recharge your batteries, see new places, meet new people and create some truly fantastic memories with your partner, friends or family. To ensure you have the best holiday possible, take steps to protect yourself and your money and you will always have the best time.
Are you ready?
A final checklist never goes amiss! It can help you remember that fateful toothbrush you leave behind, or the book that you’ve left on the sofa because you plan to start reading it before you leave. If you have time to do it in the morning before you leave – great! If not, do it the night before and prepare everything for the next morning so you’re not rushing around or panicking. Preventing as much misfortune as possible will get your holiday off to a great start.

Make sure your documents are easy to access whenever you need them, or find an app that holds that information on your phone, which will usually be close to hand – but make sure your phone will work at your destination  – and you will save yourself hassle during your travels and check-ins. Finally, ensure you have the right insurance for your travels including money cover, accident and injury, luggage and anything else you might need.

It brings an extra cost to have this protection but should anything go wrong – and we really hope nothing does – that cover can save you money for a relatively small cost. It’s worth looking into and it can be quick to do. The real time is spent finding the right place to get the insurance from.

Protecting your money
Insurance for your money only goes so far, especially when you only have cash. If it’s lost or stolen, it’s very hard to get back, if even possible at all. Having cash is very useful for all kinds of situations – it’s accepted everywhere you go but it’s also the most vulnerable form of money you can have. There are some simple tips to keep it safe, such as:
  • Split your cash to reduce the chances of losing it all
  • Avoid bum-bags and similar items that mark you as a tourist
  • Take only what you need each day and securely store the rest of your money
  • Underclothing storage is a great way to keep money safe but very awkward to access
  • Investing in anti-theft bags, which are more expensive but likely to deter thieves
You can look at other alternatives to cash such as prepaid cash cards and credit cards but it is worth looking out for any additional charges that could be applied from using them abroad. Some places will let you pay with them directly but these charges could still apply and the exchange rates won’t be as good as you received when exchanging cash at home.

The exception to this rule is the ICE prepaid currency card, which is free of all hidden fees and even comes with a backup card should lose your original card or its stolen. With chip and pin protection as standard, you will have time to transfer your balance over should the worst happen and there is even a same rate buy back option for when you come home!

Continuing the holiday at home
Do you enjoy eating out? It’s something you can enjoy on holiday more often because it’s been budgeted but what if you could fit it in to your budget on a regular basis. A Tastecard gives you that option. With over 6,500 restaurants involved in the scheme, you can bring a bit of your holiday atmosphere home with you and ICE can help. If you purchase over £1,000 of travel money, or load over £500 onto a new cash card, you can receive a voucher for a 12 month Tastecard.

You can enjoy 50% off or 2 for 1 meals at any of the restaurants included, depending on the offer from the restaurant and excluding certain times, which can let you eat out more and get more from your money. It’s a perfect gift to come back from holiday to, with the chance to continue treating yourself and escaping from your regular routine a little more often.
