Speck’s Presidio Grip & Clear Device Cases

Optimum protection of digital devices has become a hot topic in the travel world, and as the iPhones, tablets, and phones advance, the price point ramps up and equally does the risk of traveling with such a powerful, yet expensive technology. When I started backpacking, I’d take a bulky, heavy laptop and a basic cell phone that can take alternating sim cards, so depending where I was in the world I would be able to call home. But now, laptops are thin and lightweight. Yet, even more amazing, is just how powerful and versatile the tiniest devices are.
Modern phones and tablets can replace bulky cameras and lenses, because the cameras are becoming so good, and they can replace your wallet, your schedule book, and even your book and television, which means the importance of protecting such important daily devices runs paramount, especially when you’re traveling abroad. The days of carrying bulky electronics, guide books and paperwork are behind us (mostly), so why not take the proper precautions.

For me, I backpack with two options for cases, typically one that can handle the worst conditions. Say, I’m camping or hiking in the wilderness, I will always outfit my devices in a thick, shock-absorbent shell, where water and physical harm are prevented. It’s not a perfect science, but something like a Catalyst case is my goto for the roughest conditions. But for the everyday use, strolling through a European city, or for basic travel, I will stick with a slimline case that looks good, feels good, and fits comfortably in my pocket.

I found that the folks over at Speck make a good product for the everyday, simplified use. Their Presidio Grip is a semi-flexible, solid case that fits the phone like a glove, snapping on, and fitting snugly, yet slimly around your device. The Presidio Grip was designed for impact, with its bezel screen protection, impactium shock barriers on the corners, and its no-slip gripping, as part of the molding of the case, which is a nice touch because it helps keep your phone in place, whether its on a slick surface or simply in a shallow pocket.

Speck has another version, called the Presidio Clear, which is a clear plastic case that allows you to keep original the look of your phone. So, if you’re like me, and own a special edition, or a special color you prefer, you won’t have to worry about hiding the pristine classiness of the device itself. Or you can add stickers, or whatever to make your phone unique. The clear feels like a stronger plastic, with a slick surface, as opposed to the Grip design, and is rated as non-yellowing and double-layered. It is more rigid than the grip, and basically provides a simple, yet strong layer between your phone and the outside world. All in all, I think Speck makes a solid case for modern devices.
