Holiday is the time to have fun and relax. But what exactly do people do when they are on holidays? A holiday company went on a quest to find the favourite activities of British people on  holidays. They discovered visiting landmarks was the number one activity of holidaymakers in the UK. And on top of that, they voted Big Ben the Britain’s best landmark.
Blue Chip Holidays, a holiday company that provides 4 and 5 star cottages, apartments and lodges in the United Kingdom, conducted a survey of 1,000 Britishers asking them their favourite activity on holidays. To their surprise, everyone had a travel loving soul and replied that visiting UK’s landmarks was their preferred holiday activity. The survey didn’t end here. The respondents were also asked about their preferred landmark in the UK and most of them chose Houses of Parliament’s iconic clock tower, Big Ben.

The research concluded that visiting local landmarks and famous destinations was a more popular trend than going to the zoo, museums, local wildlife park, art galleries, historic houses and beautiful gardens. Majority of the participants selected Big Ben as the best landmark in the UK, while others polled for Tyne Bridge, the London Eye and York Minister placing them in the list of top 20 landmarks. Stonehenge was the second preferred location for Britishers with three times less preference than Big Ben.
The top 10 landmarks revealed by the survey included:
  1. Big Ben – 24%
  2. Stonehenge – 8%
  3. London Eye – 5%
  4. Angel of the North – 4%
  5. Edinburgh Castle – 4%
  6. Tower Bridge – 3%
  7. The Tower of London – 2%
  8. Buckingham Palace – 1.9%
  9. Blackpool Tower – 1.7%
  10. Houses of Parliament – 1.6%

Comparing these results with Blue Chip Holiday’s survey last year, we see a surprising difference. Last year’s survey was conducted among American tourists who were asked the same question. Buckingham Palace attracted Americans the most, made it to the top of best landmarks list. Surprisingly, Big Ben was nowhere in their top 10.
The Brand and Communications Manager for Blue Chips Holidays, Tori Kirwan-Taylor appreciated how people find ways to travel during holidays, which shows the spirit of exploration and love for local landmarks is still alive.

She also found the difference in opinion of British and American tourists quite shocking. However, the most intriguing thing was that Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, both are located in London. From this factor, it can be deduced that London attracts hordes of tourists from all around the world to admire its history and beauty.
