The best of luck

Always travel safe, even in the poshest of destinations. Always expect the worst to happen and then prepare for it. I’ve traveled to many places - some of the areas are known among the most dangerous in the world. So, no matter how well you plan or how many precautions you take, the worst can still come to find you. Traveling safe isn’t always enough to prevent the worst from happening.
Even to this day, with plenty of travel experience - I am finding myself at the mercy of the thief. Yesterday in the El Yunque rain forest of Puerto Rico, my rental car was parked along the road with 4-5 others while I was hiking to the La Mina falls. While I am traveling and must part from with my possessions, my mind runs through a series of checks. Yesterday, my mind was focused more on the probability of being robbed on the trail, so I stored the majority of my money in my backpack and left it at the base of the passenger’s seat.

As part of a series of attacks to each car on the road and other roads close to there, my car window was smashed in and my bag had been taken. With as much foot and road traffic, I couldn’t fathom that I would walk back to a scene such as this. The thieves took more than my money, clothes, camera equipment and toiletries - they took away the chance of touring the Caribbean as I had planned - a chance at a new outlook on life in a new part of the world.
No matter how safe you think you are, bad luck is never far away. With that said, plan your trips with scenarios like this in mind - travel light and travel safe. Do not leave yourself open to any moments of weakness, as that is the perfect time for a thief to strike. No matter how well you believe that you’ve planned for every aspect of the safety of you and your belongings, you are never truly safe.

Sorry to hear about this, Brandon. I've experienced theft while traveling--it sucked!

Your photographs are beautiful. Look forward to seeing more of your work. Take care.
