The Natural Movement: featuring Wooly Beast Designs

Along with the awakening of organic food is another movement that’s gaining steam, and that movement is with the body care products that we use on our skin and in our hair everyday. Corporations have long dominated the big name brands that have come to be household names, but for too long few questioned the contents and the toxicity contained in these products. More recently, the serious questions that have needed to be asked have come to the forefront of people’s minds, like if what you’re giving your baby is toxic, or if that skin cream is a carcinogen or not.

These are ridiculously important questions to know, and should have been better researched prior to mass production and big box sales. While some answers have been found, the more important part of this movement is that better, safer and all natural alternatives are now beginning to flood the market.

One of such companies is a local-owned Portland, Oregon based company by the catchy name of Wooly Beast Designs. Wooly Beast specializes in beard oils, perfumes, soaps, candles and more, and what sets them apart from their big brand competitors is that they actually care about what goes into the product, limiting the ingredients to natural, safe and purely beneficial oils, butters, and essential oils with some fragrance oils added to define their distinctive scents. I recently reached out to Wooly Beast Designs to trial a few of their products, to see if there really is a difference to the effect that natural products with slimmed-down ingredient lists have on the body, and on my peace of mind.

The following products are ones I’ve personally worked with from Wooly Beast Designs, and I wanted to highlight my thoughts and findings…
Misty Mountain Soy Wax Candle – While most traditional candles have been made with paraffin wax, the new, safer and cheaper wax base is all soy candles like this. The burn is clean, long lasting, and the aroma is subtle but beautiful. The scent of the Misty Mountain candle is a lovely mix of peppermint and teakwood.

Teen Spirit Soy Wax Candle – This is another 100% soy wax candle with a unique scent that marries patchouli and tobacco, and perhaps a little of teen angst in an aroma that is rich, alluring, earthy and woody. The overall burn is quite nice, though I don’t think they last quite as long as they’re advertised (25+ hours).

Lumberjack All Natural Soap – An all natural soap that took me by surprise, because not only does it smell amazing and comforting, but it works really, really well. Their soaps are small batch, handmade in Portland, and are non-toxic, cruelty free and vegan friendly. The scent is woodsy with a hint of whiskey, and it’s beautiful.

The Bearded Man Beard Oil – With the rebirth of righteous beards comes an exciting line of fragrant beard oils that not only inspire healthy growth but also fantastic smells. The Bearded Man scent is a mix of cedarwood, cinnamon, musk, and the forest. The carrier oils that make up their beard oils are sweet almond oil, coconut oil, and argan oil, which help to condition hair, nourish dry skin and inspire new growth.

Dirty Hipster Unisex Perfume Oil – Traditional perfumes are notoriously toxic, filled with chemicals and containing some other unsavory things, but when you create oil-based perfumes, you have the ability to keep them natural, non-toxic and scented mainly by essential oils, so they come with some benefits. The Dirty Hipster is a throwback to the old hippie wearing patchouli days, and to be honest, I love this scent; it’s woody, warm, fresh, and earthy.

Wooly Beast also has a selection of apparel that is stylish, eye-catching and super comfortable.

All in all, I found all Wooly Beast’s products to be very effective, attractively made, and full of amazing aromas. If you would like to learn more about natural body care products and Wooly Beast’s products, click here.
