Australia is known for its coast, and epic surfing spots. Surfers travel from all over the globe to catch a wave Down Under. What better way to check out the top surfing spots, than making a road trip out of it? Here are some tips for taking a road trip surfing vacation.
Unless you are from Australia, you will obviously need to rent a vehicle. Rent a truck or SUV (they call them Utes!) from a reputable place, like Budget Truck Rental. Choosing a company you have heard of is important. You don’t want to get stranded somewhere and not have good customer service to rely on.
Once you’ve got your vehicle, you will need your surf gear (unless you brought it with, but most people don’t opt to travel with their board), so you’ll need to find a reputable surf shop like Surf Shops Australia. It depends on where you are starting out, just google surf shops and you should be safe. Some say the best option is to fly into Sydney and out of Brisbane for the best surfing, and a great road trip.
Some beaches in Sydney to start out with are Manley, Dee-Why and Newport, they aren’t as crowded as the others. As you head north, you will hit reef and point and beach breaks between Newcastle, Point Macquarie and Coffs Harbour. Once you have surfed there, be sure to check out classic NSW spots like Angourie, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. As you cross into warmer water into Queensland, you will find the world famous surf destinations of the Gold Coast and North Stradbroke Island.
The Pacific Highway is over 500 miles long and boasts lots of secluded beaches, really famous pointbreaks, quaint coastal towns and campgrounds. You could easily spend a month or more in Australia breaking up the seemingly endless coasts of the country into bite sized road trips.
While you are on a road trip, be sure to check out other things than surfing, like snorkeling, there are tons of nature parks all over the place. Australia has a lot of natural beauty and rich in history. Make sure to take lots of pictures, and sunscreen, it is surely a trip of a lifetime.
