Travel Clothing: Quality denim can last a traveler a lifetime

These days, a majority of products are made cheaply to meet demand and cost all across the world, and with companies designing their products with planned obsolescence in mind, there’s no greater time than the present to search out and discover products that are made well and will last a long time. It’s an awful thing to waste the precious resources of our fragile planet, and planned obsolescence is one of the worst possible ideas thought up by the human race. Not only are most technological products out of date within a few months of being released, they are designed to fail, so you have to keep going out and buying new product. It’s a vicious cycle.

While I have a lot of opinions about modern technology and electronics, that’s not what my focus is today. As the title mentioned, I wanted to talk about denim, because denim is one of those products that’s been around a long time, and only in the past few decades has this product been cheapened and made worthless by average market standards. Besides, I’ve had the most difficult time finding quality denim jeans, and for years I’ve been purchasing the overpriced and fashionable, and albeit cheap brand names, because I didn’t know what was good or worth the cost. But always, within a short amount of time, the jeans would rip and tear and stretch. Most pairs I’ve owned wouldn’t have lasted a single camping trip.

So how do you find the good brands that are worth the money? You scour the internet and read comments and criticism. High quality denim makers do still exist, but they aren’t cheap and they aren’t easy to find. But perhaps I can save you some trouble… Recently, the fine folks over at Stevenson Overall Co. sent me a pair of their jeans to review on the blog here, and within minutes of opening the package, I could tell they were indeed one of those rare few who take pride in what they make. They sent me a pair of their Calistoga jeans for men.

The quality of the cotton twill fabric is apparent the moment I touched the jeans. They aren’t the most comfortable or soft, at first, but with good denim you have to wear them in for awhile before they start to feel and fit better. The fabric is thick and starched at first, but with a few good wears and washes, they will become your favorite pair, especially for the outdoors, working man type. Because while they may not be stained or ripped for some unknown fashion sense, they are made to outlast us. Even their tags sum up the very thing I’ve been discussing: ‘The Last Great Denim MFG. Co’ and ‘Made with Pride and Worn for Life.’

All in all, I found that the Calistoga jean by Stevenson Overall Co. lives up to their slogan. They gave me hope that some people out there still appreciate good quality, and are actively working against the agenda to trash and use up this precious planet we all depend on. When I camp, and it’s jeans weather, I will be wearing my Stevenson Overall jeans, because they are real denim, made of high quality fabric, and are built to withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at me.
