When I must travel for strictly business, my heart saddens and my mood sours a bit, but when I can incorporate a side trip or two, or five, then I suddenly go from sourpuss to a little kid on christmas. I want to do anything and everything, yet there’s always a restriction on time, so I must identify what it is I want to do and experience. On most of my trips, I am traveling for me, and for you, dear reader, but when I’m tied to a business obligation, I’m unable to wander and discover those wonderful, yet lesser known gems of the world that I love to find. I must keep it short and sweet. So when I’m planning a side trip, I figure out what it is what I want to do, or an experience I’ve yet to have in my lifetime. Those are the two options that I weight, almost every time. And this is, of course, dependent on where in the world I am traveling to.
Packing is similar in process, because it all depends on what I’m going to get up to, and where in the world I am. When I choose my luggage, I consider how many outfits, how much gear, cameras, laptops, etcetera, then I narrow down my options. On most business trips, I take a small carryon luggage case, and a personal bag, like a briefcase, satchel or messenger bag. All of my most precious items stay with me in one of those three bag styles; my laptop, tablet, camera, lens, hard drives, money, and passport must all stay with me. For my latest trip, I was asked to pitch a book idea, so I decided it was best to be fashionable, as well as functional.
There’s only one bag that I own, besides a much smaller leather briefcase, that would fit such an occasion as this. Two canvas walls with pockets connect parallel along the length of the bag, with the largest storage area coming in the middle of the bag. The two large pockets along the long end of the bag are large enough to hold a large laptop and a book, each, while the middle can hold all of my other items.
