Greetings campers, and wilderness adventurers. Today, I bring you part one of a three part series where I feature some lesser known, yet important gear that can save your life. Throughout this series, I will feature little oddities and amazingly compact items that can have a tremendous impact on your ability to survive in the wild, as well as have a real good time in Nature. I will be featuring three articles on Camping, Fire, and Survival where I will take a look at some of the survivalist items made by the folks at Ultimate Survival Technologies.
Note: By no means are the selections below the only items, nor solely the most important, but they are items that I find useful and so maybe you will as well.
The Hex Tarp is a lightweight and compact tarp with multiple uses. The cool thing about UST’s version is that it is reversible with a thermal layer on its backside, which can be used as a thermal blanket. Other uses include using it as a ground cloth/tarp, as well as a shelter, which can be staked town and hung between trees for a quick shelter, but I wouldn’t rely on this feature to get you through any heavy winter weather. The Hex Tarp is in a hexagonal shape, designed for a single person, and I found it to be a great addition to my camp list.
 The Reflect Clothesline is a stretchable cord in a material that can reflect light, so you can trace its whereabouts at night with a light. The clothesline works well, stretching up to nine feet, and includes eight clips for hanging drying clothes. If you plan to spend some serious time in Nature, where you will either need to do laundry or fear being caught in a downpour, it might be an important inclusion in your camp setup.  The No-See-Um Head Net is an effective insect protector without the use of harmful chemicals. It has a tapered neck with elastic bottom to ensure a secure fit that can stretch to fit over a variety of hats. Some places in the world can be beautiful, but also downright awful to experience if you visit unprepared during the wrong season. I’ve visited great natural areas at the wrong time and was nearly run out by the mosquitos and midges, and now I can only wish I had one of these head nets – if only to maintain my sanity. |  The Packable Cup is a a small metal keychain, less than two inches in diameter, that extends and opens into a cup ideal for ht and cole beverages. The durable stainless steal construction can hold two ounces of fluid when expanded and easily clips to a backpack, belt or carabiner. When you’re trekking in the wilderness, as far away from civilization as you can, a cup can become a much-needed luxury item when it comes down to survival.  The Tick Wrangler is as the name suggests. Back home in Ohio, the ticks in wooded areas can be a downright nuisance. I often travel with my dog and she has it worst of all. And while I’ve become accustomed to pulling ticks from her, the tick wrangler is a great little invention that saves me time, lessens the grossness factor, as well as ensures that I do it right the first time. |
