The day is near, and while it’s crunch time with a little bit of chaos thrown in, as to be expected, my beard and moustache are ready for the big day. But it wasn’t always like that. For years, I’ve struggled with growing out a full, well-manicured beard, because of a few thinner patches on my cheeks and my incessant need to trim my moustache prematurely. It gets difficult to eat when it hangs over your top lip, ya know?
For years, I would let my beard grow out because I hated shaving, and then once I reached the mountain man status of wildbeardness, I would shave it all off and start again. My cheeks wouldn’t grow in very thick above my jaw and so I hated the damn thing, but then as my wedding date neared, I had to decide between clean shaven or righteous beard (or as close as I could get to respectable beard status) for my wedding photos. While babyface Brandon is apparently cute to my significant other, I don’t prefer it, so I decided it was time to take my beard seriously. With a few months to go, I started taking beard supplements with biotin to help the growth rate and healthiness of my hair, and I changed my daily regimen.
To maintain a healthy beard, it takes a mixture of techniques that are quite basic, but are powerful in helping spur along beard growth. Without further ado, here it is, basic but effective: Wash your beard every other day, leaving one day to marinade in the oils that naturally appear on our skin and hair. When applying soap, conditioner, beard oil and balm, massage the stuff into the skin and hair, because it helps to stimulate new growth and helps toward proper hygiene which also helps growth (because your pores and follicles aren’t blocked). When drying, towel dry gently, leaving the beard slightly damp.
The next step is to work beard oil into your beard and skin, because the natural oils and essential oils within the oil will inspire new growth, while conditioning the hair, soothing itch and moisturizing the dry skin underneath. Then, optionally, you can apply a bit of beard balm, which is similar to beard oil in that it conditions the beard, but it also helps to maintain the wilder and unruly hairs. Then, as growth begins, you can start with grooming and shaping to your future goal length and style, but I like to see a professional for help there.
I train my moustache to each side, so that it grows in full, and so that I can eventually reach my ultimate beard goal. Training is a long and arduous practice, because you have to deal with the daily grind of messing up your beard with every bit of food and drink getting in the stache. But with patience and time, sure enough the moustache will train how you want it. I use moustache wax to get the job done. A good one, that I personally like, is Firehouse Moustache Wax, which is a thick wax available in three different colors: light, dark and wacky tacky. Thankfully, they sent over a few cans to try out, which is how I know Firehouse’s wax is of quality, without additives. I found it to be quite nice, mainly because it’s stronger than most, while also being versatile in the color option. It also smells nice, subtly floral. Other waxes that I’ve tried don’t last throughout the day and tend to tint my moustache lighter.
