Weekly Wanderlust – Arikok National Park of Aruba

When people travel to the Caribbean, most of the time they’re trying to escape frigid temperatures and an excess of white precipitation. So, when holiday-goers end up on a Caribbean island, majority of international travelers ascend upon the infamous resorts and high-rise hotel areas, and Aruba is no different.
What a lot of people don’t know is that Aruba offers quite a bit more than its white sand beaches, vibrant teal waters, high rise hotels and resorts, or their booze cruise day tours. If you visit Aruba, I suggest renting a car, if only for a couple of days, because one of the coolest sand dune regions in the world is in the northwestern most part of the island, as is Aruba’s iconic California Lighthouse – there are countless other attractions and beautiful areas to experience around the island. My favorite was the Arikok National Park, which sits pretty toward the northeastern quarter of the island. It’s a large expanse, in comparison to the rest of the island, that offers rugged trails, a hidden natural pool, miles of underground caves, stunning rocky coasts and white sandy beaches.

What I loved most about the park was the picturesque rolling hills and the varied rocky landscape, but most of all, I couldn’t find a better place to experience one of Aruba’s most valuable aspects, their gorgeous and literally breathtaking sunsets. The sun sets quickly, so be sure to pick your spot out and just sit back and relax. The sky darkens, as the sun lowers, but it’s not long before the sky is painted with some of the most vibrant and beautiful colors imaginable. The warm Caribbean sun, mixed with the consistent soft breeze of the island, and the fresh sea air makes Aruba one of the top destinations in the world to escape any winter.
