Redecorate your dining room on a budget

The dining room is probably one of the most underused rooms in the house. In order to make this room more appealing, why not see whether it can be redecorated on a tight budget?
Here are a few tips on how:

Taking stock
First of all, take a good long look at the room and then see what really needs to be changed. A set of new dining room chairs and a table may well be the best placed to start. If you have decided to visit a high street store or are looking at new dining room chairs from Sainsbury’s then you may be pleasantly surprised by the range and prices of furniture. After this expenditure you may well want to see how you can decorate the rest of the room.

Decoration
You don’t need to repaint a room in order to give it a new look. Sometimes the addition of new curtains or even blinds can produce a dramatic change. Think carefully about your colour choices and whether you want a pattern and follow these tips to ensure good results:
  • Include colours in a 70-20-10 split. This means your base, neutral colour should be used on 70% of the room with a darker shade used on 20% and an even darker or bolder accent colour for the remaining 10%.
  • Think of ways to make your style ideas flow together. Give your room a theme (this can be a colour, activity or genre) and think of ways to include it.
  • Personalise the room with art work. Photos may not work well in dining rooms depending on how formal they are but a focal picture can make all the difference.

Lighting
If you want to create a bright and attractive room, see if you can invest in some spotlights, strategically placed around the room. Alternatively, you could invest in a dimmer switch to change the room’s mood.

Flowers
Flowers are a cheap way of creating a friendly atmosphere and if you have some growing in your garden, so much the better. Just make sure that they are placed in an attractive vase at the centre of the dining room table for maximum effect and change the water to keep them looking fresh.

If this all sounds like too much work, there are some great artificial versions available and you can always opt for decorative strands, crystals and other trinkets instead.

This is a guest post on behalf of Sainsbury’s. If you are planning to buy new dining room chairs from Sainsbury's then have a look at their extensive range of furniture and accessories.
